The Chittenden County Transportation Authority (CCTA) was founded in 1973 by the
Vermont Legislature and provided transit services in seven communities in Chittenden
County: The City of Burlington along with the communities of  Essex, South Burlington,
Winooski, Shelburne, Williston and Milton. CCTA is a full service public transportation
provider, offering services including fixed route bus service, parking lot, supermarket and
school shuttles, a county-wide ridesharing program, transportation for Medicaid recipients
and contracted paratransit service for people who cannot use the bus. In 2011, Chittenden
County Transportation Authority (CCTA) and
Green Mountain Transit Agency (GMTA)
became a single unified organization, making CCTA the first and only regional transit
authority in the State of Vermont. On January 22, 2016, it was announced that CCTA would
fully merge with
Green Mountain Transit Authority and be renamed Green Mountain Transit,
becoming a regional system for the entire area. The merge was finalized in October of 2016.
