The former Snelling Garage located at 400 Snelling Avenue North on the northeast corner of Interstate 94 in St. Paul's
Midway area, originally opened in 1907. The facility originally included the Twin Cities Rapid Transit Company's main
maintenance shops and also constructed streetcars from 1907 to 1928. The last streetcars operated from the garage
in 1953, when service was converted to buses. The facility went through several operators right up to the current
Metro Transit. Snelling garage was permanently closed in Septenber of 2001, and all of its routes were transferred
to the new East Metro Transit Garage at 800 Mississippi Street, which opened in 2001. The Snelling Garage and
property were retained for a while during which time transit officials and St Paul City Council decided its fate. In 2002
the garage building was demolished, but the property was still used to park some buses and for other uses. Initially,
plans were considered for a big box store on the property, however it was eventually announced on October 23,
2015 that a new stadium for the Minnesota United FC major league soccer team would be built on the property.
Allianz Field was completed in February of 2019, and the stadium opened about two months later on April 13, 2019.
