Minnesota Valley Transit Authority initially served the area south of Minneapolis, comprising the communities of
Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount, and Savage. Headquartered in Burnsville, the contracted service began
in 1990 when these suburban communities chose to opt-out of receiving Metro Transit service under a provision of
the Minnesota State legislature. Originally, funding for their own transit came directly from property taxes. Since 2001,
transit funding comes from vehicle sales tax. In 2013, the MVTA became the first system in the region to operate a
bus rapid transit (BRT) line, the Red Line, between Apple Valley and the Mall of America. In December of 2020, the
BRT service was transferred to Metro Transit of Minneapolis/St. Paul. On January 1, 2015, the services of
"BlueXpress" to the communities of Prior Lake and Shakopee were absorbed into the MVTA network. Having primarily
express/commuter routes supplemented with some local community routes, MVTA still operates to this day.
