Public Transit in Michigan City began in 1886 with the Citizens Street Railway Co. operating horse cars along
Franklin Street, west on 9th Street, and on Willard Avenue. In 1892, Lake Cities Electric Railway Co. took over
operations, and by 1893 electric streetcars had replaced the horse cars. In 1902, the service was sold to Michigan
City Traction Co. That same year, a second streetcar line was constructed along 9th Street east of Franklin Street
and along Michigan Street. IN 1903, Interurban service from, Michigan City to LaPorte began, operated by the
Chicago & South Shore Railway (local service in LaPorte also provided). This interurban service combined with the
Indiana Railway Co. in 1905 to form the Northern Indiana Railway Co. This company also acquired Michigan City
Traction Co. in 1906. With this, Michigan City's third local streetcar line opened in 1907, using interurban trackage
to LaPorte on Franklin Street south of 9th Street. By 1932, streetcars had been discontinued in Michigan City.
Yellow Transportation Co. provided bus service at first, with several changes in operators over the next 23 years
occurring. In 1955, the city took over all local bus service. Known as Michigan City Municipal Coach, the city
continues to provide service to this date, adopting the simplified name of Michigan City Transit in 2007.
