Rollsigns from Oakville, ON
|
This set of mylar rollsigns have a print date of April of 1990, and they each
have 34 exposures. The front sign (left) was received damaged as shown.
Any missing text was filled in to the drawn image.
These signs have been drawn virtually perfect to scale. The side sign (left)
has been enlarged to 1 1/2 times that of the other signs on the website to
show detail. Their respective sign tags are shown below.
This mylar front route sign was designed for one of their 900 series Orion V buses. The sign is dated August 27, 1990, and it has 35 exposures, having added "102 Winston Park", and "N" and "S" to 21 and 22. Its sign tag is shown below.

C.H. Norton operated the first bus system in Oakville in 1962 with only two routes. Their franchise expired in 1972. In the 1970s, Gray Coach Lines intercity service operated through Oakville, offering some local coverage while passing through the city. September 5, 1972 saw the inauguration of the Oakville Transit that still operates today.
|
To receive extra funding from the provincial government, and from encouragement from the disabled community, Oakville and its neighbouring
system, Burlington Transit, introduced icons on their rollsigns to represent destinations within their respective cities. This set of mylar rollsigns
are both dated February 14, 1996, each having 66 exposures. Their respective sign tags are shown at the end of each sign.
The side sign (right) was obtained in "mint condition", having never been installed in a bus. Its image has been scaled to 1.5 times that of the
front sign to show detail. The side sign's image was also created entirely by scanning the rollsign rather than drawing it. It's the only image on
Rollsign Gallery that was created using that method.

1/19/99 TRANSIGN

This mylar jumbo front route sign was designed for one of their fourteen 1999 built 9900 series Orion VI buses. The 66 exposures on this sign are the same
as those on the other two "icon" signs with one visible difference. The previous two signs which replaced the older blue print signs were made by Multiscreen.
This version sign was printed by Transign, and came with the buses when they were built. Between the two, the colouring of the "streetlight" icon that accom-
panies the ROUTE 17 exposures was slightly different. The differences in those icons and the sign's tag are shown below. These rollsigns were used in
those Orion VI buses for just a short period of time, as sometime in the early 2000s (before 2005), all 14 buses were retrofitted with LED electronic signs.
This change coincided with the delivery of their 2001 built Orion VI buses and 2003 built Orion VII buses, as they came delivered with LED destination signs.

Oakville Transit 1990 built OBI 05.501 #904, part of the series #901 to #907 Orion V buses that were delivered with the light blue style rollsign shown above left, is seen at Lakeside Village Mall on November 8, 1994.
