Rollsigns from Chalk River, ON
Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.
For decades AECL operated bus service between Pembroke and its facilities at Chalk River
and Deep River. As a public agency, AECL maintained an "operator" membership in the
Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), but it's not clear if their operations were ever
common carrier. Some time in the late 1990's or early 2000's, AECL moved to
contracting the bus service. As of 2007 the contractor was Thom Transit Ltd.
This mylar front destination sign was
designed for one of the A.E.C.L GMC
New Look buses. It is dated March 2,
1977 and has eight exposures. The sign
tag with its misspelling is shown below.
This Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. GMDD New Look bus, operated
by Thom Transit Ltd. after they were awarded the contract for service,
and displaying a rollsign similar to the one shown here, is seen
southbound on Deep River Road at Huron Street in Deep River,
Ontario on a rainy night on October 26, 2000. Unfortunately this
was the only Atomic Energy bus I ever photographed.
